Eric A. Smith

• Represented the liquidators of large property/casualty insurance companies in complex disputes with corporate claimants and reinsurers, including disputes over coverage for asbestos and environmental claims, and in disputes over procedures in insurer liquidations.
• Represent insurance regulators in examinations and reorganizations of insurance companies.
• Represented insurers and others in coverage and other contractual disputes.

• Arrowood v. Workers’ Compensation Trust Board, 104 Mass. App. Ct. 419 (2024) (FAR granted). Represented the insurer where the Appeals Court reversed the decision of the Reviewing Board denying reimbursement to the insurer and reconsidered its own earlier decision.
• Solis v. Home Ins. Co., 848 F.Supp.2d 91 (D.N.H. 2012). Represented the liquidator where the District Court rejected the Department of Labor’s claim that the Federal Longshore and Harbor Workers Compensation Act preempted the state insurer liquidation priority statute.
• In the Matter of the Liquidation of American Mut. Liab. Ins. Co., 440 Mass. 796 (2004). Represented the liquidator in successfully defending challenged parts of the liquidation plan for the insurer.

Outside of his legal practice, Eric has devoted years to serving on various community boards and committees, including the Belmont Zoning Board of Appeals for over ten years (three of which as Chair), Belmont Warrant Committee, Wellington School Building Committee, and Belmont Town Meeting.

Eric spent four years on the Board of Directors of the Jameson Singers, a Boston-area vocal ensemble, and exercises his vocal cords singing with the group.
