On January 17, Sandy Moskowitz, Davis Malm shareholder and chair of the Equal Justice Coalition, served as the master of ceremonies at the Equal Justice Coalition’s Beacon of Justice Award reception. Awards were presented to four legislators who were selected for their outstanding support of state funding for the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation. The Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation makes grants to organizations that provide civil legal services to low-income residents.

The honorees were House Speaker Pro Tempore Patricia Haddad (D-Somerset), Senate President Pro Tempore Stanley Rosenberg (D-Amherst), Rep. Ruth B. Balser (D-Newton), and Sen. Brian Joyce (D-Milton).

“We are thankful for these legislators’ extraordinary effort in support of civil legal aid in the Commonwealth,” said Sandy. “They understand the need for the Commonwealth to invest in providing legal services for low-income people facing critical civil legal problems and have been consistent supporters of that investment.”

The Equal Justice Coalition is a collaboration of the Massachusetts Bar Association, Boston Bar Association, and the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation. It is committed to ensuring that low income people have access to legal aid when they have civil (non-criminal) matters.

Sandy has dedicated himself to supporting civil legal assistance throughout his three-decade legal career. Before taking his current position at the Equal Justice Coalition, he created and operated for over ten years the BBA Lawyer for a Day Program at the Boston Housing Court. In 2006, Sandy was awarded the Adams Pro Bono Publico Award by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court for his work in this program, which has been a model in both assisting low income litigants and in relieving the great burden pro se litigants have on the court and its clerk’s office. Sandy also services on the Board of Directors of Greater Boston Legal Services.
